[change] Instructions

Did you know? (DYK) entries are interesting facts that not many people may know. On this page possible entries are listed and members of the DYK project assess the nominations for the DYK section. DYKs are listed on the Main Page.

[change] How to enter a DYK

List articles on this page under the Nominations area, below. The newest nominations go at the top. If you would like to make a nomination, you should read the instructions".

If there is a picture that you would like to see used with your nomination, please add it with your nomination as shown below. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion.

[change] Rules

  • Information presented in any article nominated for DYK should be verifiable and unbiased. There must be a citation of a credible source to support the fact contained in the hook.
    • Articles that are tagged for bias with {{NPOV}} or for lack of accuracy with {{Disputed}} are not suitable for DYK.
    • Articles where facts are questioned with {{fact}} tags may not be suitable.
  • The article linked should be easy to read.
  • Articles nominated for DYK should not be too short.
    • Three sentence stubs are not suitable.
    • The text of the article must be at least 800 characters. The number of characters can be measured with this tool .
  • The hook used to encourage people to read the article should be interesting to read. Information mentioned in the hook should be in the article text (not in a footnote, or in a linked reference, or in an infobox).
    • Whether a hook is not interesting should not be a matter for only one reviewer to decide. The first reviewer marks as {{DYKalmost}} if they feel the hook is not sufficiently interesting, with wording like "Is there a more interesting hook?". If 3 assessors (including the initial one) agree that the hook is boring and no alternative has been put forward, the nomination is rejected with {{DYKno}} and advice to the nominator that "3 reviewers feel that this hook is not interesting, please suggest an alternative hook."
  • DYKs should not be very good articles (VGA) already as VGAs already get their own spotlight on the Main Page as the "Selected article".
    • All VGA nominations for DYK will be declined. VGAs are not allowed as they are featured on the Main Page in a different category already during their own time.

    • Not really an interesting hook, and the citation for this is a link to urbandictionary for one of the words which does not prove they are "well known." Either way (talk) 01:01, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

  • ...that Scottish football player Kenny Miller is one of the few players to cross the Old Firm twice? Kennedy (talk) 11:50, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
    • - Not interesting enough to me, but that could be cause I don't like soccer. Still it should be interesting to people that don't like soccer also.-- CM16 MLB  02:41, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
      • Sigh. Someone else give input on this please? Double standards by CM16 again. Kennedy (talk) 09:06, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

  • You'll need to bold the right article. Synergy 20:22, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
  • I did. it's about August.-- CM16 MLB  21:47, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry, like the hook, but the August article isn't long enough (needs to be at least 800 characters. Yotcmdr✼ Merry Christmas ! ✼ 21:51, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

  • I can't seem to find this hook in the article. Can you point it out please? ѕwirlвoy  02:57, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
    • It is under the section "Eating with chopsticks". Chenzw  Talk  10:51, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

  • (e/c) How about changing it to, "... from selling..."? — RyanCross (talk) 13:42, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
  • He doesn't technically sell it, though. Stores and companies sell the product, he just endorses it. Yeah, it's a nit-picky semantics kind of thing, but, that's the way it is. Either way (talk) 14:13, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
  • I've just checked the EN version, and it's a copy past except for one word (spokesperson on simple, but it isn't simple) I don't think it's long enough either (should be 800 bytes of text). Yotcmdr✼ Merry Christmas ! ✼ 13:45, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
  • Oops, forgot to count the characters. I counted 452 characters so far. — RyanCross (talk) 13:51, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

  • Did a little copyediting on the hook. Though, I think the hook should be reworded to something like "one of the oldest currently professional football clubs" or "one of the oldest football clubs that is currently professional". 02:17, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
- I don't see any problems with this. Yotcmdr✼ Merry Christmas ! ✼ 14:20, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

  • ...that as rickrolling has become more popular, two of the many videos online have been watched over 13 million times each? ѕwirlвoy  21:58, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
  • We have a rickrolling hook on the main page right now. Should we wait a little longer before putting another hook from the same article up? I know we can use the article more than once, but I'm not really a fan of having them bunched so close together. Other thoughts? Either way (talk) 22:07, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
  • Sure. If accepted, we could put it on a future main page. ѕwirlвoy  22:59, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
  • Could we have rickrolling as a link to a YouTube video, and rickroll our viewers? :P I am joking Kennedy (talk) 09:23, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

  • Any chance I can get you to cite this with an inline citation?
  • No inline citations, but there is one reference to a book. My only concern is that I don't have it, so there's no way of telling whether it came from the book or not. Hopefully it should. - Æåm Fætsøn /ˈaɪæm ˈfætsən/ 08:02, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
