When is the best time to buy an iPod?

I want to buy a new iPod. As far as I can tell, the prices are fairly fixed- they don't vary much from shop to shop. Do the prices change much over time? Do the prices go down just before new models are announced? Do they go up, eg. at Christmas? *When* is the best time to buy a new iPod, or doesn't it make much difference?

As an additional question then, does anyone know when the 6th generation iPods are due out?

Yes prices change when a new model comes out.

The best thing is to determine what you want from your iPod. How much music do you need to have at one time? Do you need movies? Do you want a touch screen? What functions do you want from it.

From there you can choose which iPod you would like to buy. Then, I would go to an auction site like ebay.com and look for the one you want, at the price you can afford.

Hope that helps :)
Good luck

dude apple doesn't even know what to invent anymore. -_- ipods will be ipods. Report Abuse
That's what people said before the iPhone, Mrs. Cullen. They keep things under wraps so they will have the newest, coolest thing. If they had announced the iPhone a year in advance, people would have instantly tried to match them. Pixar does the same thing. They both reel out the best. Report Abuse
the iphone was a knockoff , and ipods are so overpriced for theyre cheap quality Report Abuse
Think about it, you are mindlessly spending big money to buy crap. Just get a simple music player... anything else will become outdated and "useless" in a year. Screw the jones! Report Abuse
Zunes are better. I've had both before. Report Abuse
it always is the right time for iPod Report Abuse
during the time around thanksgiving is when they put the prices on electronics and mostly everything else really low at walmart but u have to go really early like about 7 or 8 Report Abuse

In the spring following Apple's annual keynote address, because those keynote addresses are when the price drops usually occur, and Apple doesn't come out with new iPods around that time, only in their Fall keynote addresses, so the iPod you're looking to buy won't become obsolete a week later.

6th generation iPods will likely come out next fall, as Apple usually presents new iPods in their fall keynote addresses, though they didn't upgrade the iPod classic this year, just the nano.

Well Apple earlier this month revamped the iPod line. The announced iPods were:

    iPod classic (6G)
dropped 80 & 160 GB models for 120 GB. Same price.

    iPod shuffle (2G)
just a refresh of the available colors

    iPod nano (4G)
return to 1G & 2G form factor, accelerometer, shake to shuffle, new GB spaces same price.

    iPod touch (2G)
built in speaker, built in Nike+, slimmer, 2.1 firmware.

I would think closer to Christmas would be a good time as stores would reduce prices to take advantage of the holiday rush. I plan on getting a 120 GB classic to replace my 30 GB 5G iPod. Its great that I would end up paying the same price for 4x more storage.

    When you want one!

When new models come out, the old ones go on sale - it's a continuous cycle. It depends on what you want it to do and how long that model's been on the market. Have a look through the latest electronics magazines to see if any new features and models are about to come on the market. When they do, their predecessors will bound to be reduced as people will want the updated version.

it doesnt make much difference and prices dont really very from shop to shop because apple has worldwide price standards that are met. I'd buy 1 now just be4 the christmas rush. I have an ipod nano n its great value. the average ipod is about the same amount of money as a phone or sumthing!! and their not just a music player mine has movies, shows, music videos, games n podcasts!

THE BEST THING TO DO IS: Go to the ipod website and go to the refurbished section you can pick up what is practically a new Ipod for a more reasonable price. In Feb I bought a 30gb Video Ipod for £99 (store price was between £130-160) and it is working pretty well now. It also come with a 3 month warranty.

ive never seen an ipod on sale, and they dont really go up at certain times. So get it whenever, it doesnt matter. Maybe look into when they are coming out with new models though. I bought mine and less than a month later they came out with new models....so I could have gotten double the space for the same price.

Prices will usually go down straight after christmas (or an importent holiday) and when new items become avaliable so if they make an ipod classic 6th generation the current 5th generation will be cheaper
